Going on about 25 years now, the Falcons have journeyed to San Gabriel for a Christmas tasting extraordinaire. This year Marlene decided to put together her first ever vintage tasting. She always does a great job She told a story about how the first years the Falcons chose the beers themselves, but after a few years of the usual suspects (Snowcap, Anchor, Celebration, etc), she took it over to go plumbing the depths of oddities.

Bruce as always took notes, which will be up before long, but here's the list at least:

No word from the plumber. The dogs have stayed in the yard. I have to admit, life would be simpler with propane.

It's been a busy week, but not for the brewery. My plan to let the plumber take some time evaluating the BTUs has worked splendidly. Not a peep.

I have had time to ponder the advantages of propane. I had the feeling some brewers I communicated with were rooting for propane, kind of like someone might root for a sports team. Looking back, I can certainly see advantages.

Dark Lagers Club Only Comp Judging

We will be judging Dark Lagers for the AHA Club Only Competition at the January 8th meeting. Bring in yours and we will select one to represent the Falcons!

Happy Repeal Day!

Happy Prohibition repeal today!

Today marks the anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution thanks to the votes in Pennsylvania, Ohio and (oddly enough) Utah. Federal Prohibition officially ended on December 15th, 1933, but the important day is December 5th 1933 as the day it all officially went down.

Oho! Orange Honey Red Ale

This unique red ale is the inspiration of Cookie Kaplan my assistant brewer as well as my every day honey. Speaking of honey that was a big part of the inception of this brew. The Orange Blossom honey in this red ale spurred us on to add a couple of cups of crushed Valencia Oranges. Both the honey and the oranges went into the boil at flame out to preserve more of the flavor and aroma. It turned out as a medium hopped red ale with a slight orange flavor and aroma as well as a distinct honey presence, not actual honey flavor but a sweetness that complements the malt flavors. It was good enough to win the Best of Meeting award at the December 2011 Club meeting.

Beanie's Wife's English Toffee Recipe


Walnuts or Pecans (I use large bag of pecans at Costco: ¾ of the bag makes 3 batches)
4 – 6 Large Hershey Bars or any kind of chocolate (4 bars makes 3 or 4 batches)
2 cubes of butter (½ lb)
1 Cup Sugar
1/4 Cup Water (Sometimes I substitute “Beanie's Big Ass Porter” for the water)

Items you'll need:
Non-stick sauce pan (cleans up easier)
Wooden Spoon
Parchment paper
Cookie Sheet (9” x 13”)
Chopper or food processor
Container for the nut/chocolate mixture
Butter knife

I just wanted to thank each and everyone of you for taking the time to bring a toy to our 3rd Annual Spark of Love Toy Drive. We collected 3 big boxes and 3 giant Hefty bags full of toys for the children. We delivered them to the Fire Department on Fallbrook. They were truly astounded to see how many toys we were unloading from the car. They asked us to thank all of you for your generosity.

The Clumsy Brewer - Wrestling with IBUs or Why do we need a dog?

Ah, the good life.

Sitting in the backyard, watching the sparge water gently seep
through the grains and pour into the boil kettle that sweet, caramel
colored wort that will be beer in a few weeks. Meanwhile, the luscious
scent of bratwurst and warming buns lets us know lunch is almost ready.

And no heavy propane tanks to lug around. Let the Gas Company do the work!

Wham! Back to reality! According to our plumber, I can't afford
to supply half a million BTU's, just in case I need them later. I
really have to figure out how many I'll likely need and pay to install

Working at home today and while I'm off in the back working on work type things, what do I hear but a fleet of barking dogs.

Race up to the front and low and behold two big boxes (and heavy as hell)

And the boxes are crammed full of fooferal...

Saison for the Bee Keepers

This is more of a story about the brewing of a beer than anything else. My original brew partner (Daniel) has had two children since we first started brewing five years ago, so we rarely get to brew together. This was a rare event to be able to brew alone like we used to. The brew day started off perfectly, the weather was warm and there bees were flying around. We decided to brew a Saison for the fall to capture the perfect warm fall day. We were mashed in and were cleaning as we went, when Daniel suddenly screamed and found a bee up his pant leg. The bee stung him and I laughed as I asked if he was allergic. He said he wasn't but that all changed quickly... Fifteen minutes later he turned to me with his face swollen to twice the normal size. He quickly headed over to the drug store for Benadryl. He returned a few minutes later with the pills and took a few, chasing them with a little beer. All seemed fine until he fell out of his chair onto the floor nearly unconscious. After calling his wife, my girlfriend, and a doctor, we headed over to the ER, but not before I stopped recurring the wort and set up to mash out. After a short wait in the waiting room and 2 hours with a doctor, we found out Daniel had developed a deadly Bee allergy. After a life time of being a hobbyist bee keeper he had lost all resistance to bee stings. After the ER and a day of panic we returned back to my house to finish the beer. To always remember his near death experience, we added the dead bee to the mash-out and a small amount of honey to the wort.

beers and more at the world famous Stuffed Sandwich on Saturday
December 10th at 1PM.

The cost will be about $20 plus the cost of your mandatory sandwich.
Remember that Sam & Marlene always pull out some fun stuff for us.

The Clumsy Brewer - Birth of a New System

Two years without brewing is two years too many!

My dad and I used to brew at least a half dozen batches a year.  But
not anymore.  Why?  It's too much work.

We gather the ingredients, including propane, the day before.  And
then on brew day we construct, deconstruct and reconstruct each piece
of the system for each stage of brewing.  By the end of the day, we're
both exhausted.

If only we had a system that was already put together.  One we could
just wheel out and just start connecting hoses to.  One that ran off

Southern California Home Brewers Festival 2012

Come join the Falcons and 31 other home brewing clubs at the Southern California Home Brewers Festival May 4-5, 2012 at beautiful Lake Casitas near Ojai. CHA Membership annual membership (see http://calhomebrewers.org/) is $40 until 31 January, $45 after 1 Feb, and $50 after 1 March. You must purchase your membership by May 2, 2012 or you will not be allowed into the fest.
